01Value-Chain Gap
While Iran has significant propylene production, there is a recognized domestic consumption gap, with demand exceeding current supply. This gap is being addressed through substantial investments in new production capacity and diversification of production technologies. There is also a gap in fully integrated downstream processing for all potential derivatives, with a strong focus currently on polypropylene.
02Market Access
Propylene primarily serves the domestic market as a critical intermediate for downstream petrochemical industries, particularly for polypropylene production. Exports of propylene derivatives, especially polypropylene, are significant, utilizing major ports like Bandar Abbas, Imam Khomeini Port, and Bushehr, with routes to Europe, Asia, and Africa. The planned national pipeline network will enhance domestic market access and distribution efficiency.
03Key Constraints
Key constraints include the need for continuous investment in new production technologies and capacity to meet growing domestic demand, potential challenges in securing advanced technology licenses due to sanctions, and the development of a robust national pipeline infrastructure for efficient distribution. Fluctuations in feedstock prices (naphtha, natural gas, propane) can also impact production costs.
